This same ritual has been repeated every January 19th, Poe’s birthday, since then. In 1993, the cognac and roses were accompanied by a note reading, “The torch will be passed” and since then, a younger man has appeared. Every year, Poe scholars watch the "Poe Toaster" from the bellfry of neighboring Westminister Church, which overlooks the cemetary, but have never attemted to learn the "Poe Toasters" identity.
