TheMaltese Falcon
Dashiell HammettBorn in 1894, Dashiell Hammett dropped out of school at age 13 and worked at anumber of jobs before landing in the San Francisco office of the Pinkerton DetectiveAgency. Hammett worked there for over ten years, picking up enough experiencesto fuel his writing for the rest of his life. During WWI, Hammett served as anambulance driver and returned home with tuberculosis. His fragile health madehim unable to continue working as a detective, and he turned to writing. In 1924 he introduced the popular character,The Continental Op, and other hard-boiled characters soon followed including Sam Spade in1930's "The Maltese Falcon" and Nick and Nora Charles 1934's "TheThin Man." Working in Hollywood as a screenwriter, Hammett met the playwright LillianHellman and they remained together for the next 31 years until Hammett's deathin 1961. In 1951, Hammett was jailed for five months for refusing to testifybefore a McCarthy-era hearing.
