Charlie Chan Earl Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio on August 24, 1884 and attended Harvard University. He worked as a newspaper writer before starting his writing career in 1913. It was in 1919, during a vacation to Honolulu with his wife, that Biggers "discovered" Charlie Chan, who was a unique hero for the time, "trustworthy, benevolent, and philosophical." All but one of the six Charlie Chan books were turned into immensely popular films, but sadly, Biggers did not live to share Charlie's sucess, he died of a heart attach at age 48 in April, 1933.
