Born in 1843 in New York City to well-known intellectuals, James spent his childhood shuttling between the U.S. and Europe. After studying law at Harvard, he lived for a time in Paris before settling in London. A keep observer of the social scene and an armchair psychologist, James published "Daisy Miller" in 1879. It is the story of a young American woman visiting Europe for the first time and how her style and values conflict with those of her European hosts. "The Wings Of The Dove," published in 1902, is the shattering story of a young English couple, Kate Croy and Merton Densher, who are engaged in a passionate and clandestine love affair. Unwilling to marry Densher because he is poor, Kate devises a plan: she and Densher will accompany dying American heiress Milly Theale to Venice, where Densher will seduce Milly. Then, upon her death, Milly will leave all her money to Densher. Then plan, however, goes horribly awry when Densher falls in love with Milly. James''s most famous work is his ghost story "The Turn of the Screw," a tale of sexual and psychological ambiguity. It is the story of a young governess at a remote country estate who starts seeing the ghosts of her predecessor and the predecessor''s violent lover. She comes to suspect that the ghosts are controlling her two orphaned charges, but the children refuse to reveal whether they too see the ghosts, and the rest of the household staff sees nothing. Is the governess going mad or is she really seeing ghosts, and what accounts for her growing obsession with her male charge? Until the truth is revealed in its final sentence, "The Turn of the Screw" creates spine-tingling suspense."...he passed his hand into her arm with a force that produced for them another pause.

Henry James"The Turn of the Screw" was made into the famous 1961 horror film "The Innocents," starring Deborah Kerr as the governess. Director Peter Bogdanovich filmed "Daisy Miller" in 1974 starring his then amour, Sybill Shepherd, and "The Wings of the Dove," starring Helena Bonham-Carter as Kate Croy, became critical success in 1997. In 1915 at the outbreak of World War I, Henry James became a British citizen as a declaration of loyalty to his adopted country, and as a protest against the U.S.''s failure to enter the war.
