Agatha Christie Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay, county of Devon. By December 1926, she was already a well-known mystery writer; her seventh book, "The Murder of Roger Acroyd" was on the best-seller lists. She had a seven-year-old daughter, Rosalind, and had been married to a WWI air ace Archie Christie, for 12 years. All should have been well, but it wasn''t. Archie was in love and having an affair with a younger woman, Nancy Neele, and his wife was understandably nervous and depressed. On the evening of Friday, December 3, 1926, Agatha Christie disappeared from her home in a small town in Berkshire, England. Her car was found abandoned the next morning, and in it were some of her clothes and identification. Earlier that week, she had written several confusing letters: to her brother-in-law, said she was going on vacation in Yorkshire; to the local chief constable, said she feared for her life.15,000 volunteers searched the English countryside and authorities dredged a nearby lake. Christie''s picture was displayed prominently on the front pages of every English newspaper. Vacationers at a health spa in Harrogate commented to a fellow guest, a Mrs. Neele, how much she resembled the pictures, to which she just laughed. Finally, the police were called to the spa, and they brought Archie Christie along. When he saw his wife, she exclaimed: "Fancy, my brother has just arrived." The Christies immediately went into seclusion and claimed that Agatha was suffering from amnesia. Two years later they quietly divorced, and for the remainder of her life Agatha Christie refused to ever discuss her 11-day disappearance. In 1930, she married the English archaeologist Max Mallowan, and they remained happily married until her death in 1976.
