Nixon at the White House. Their meeting was initiated by Elvis, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter while on board an airplane heading to Washington, where Elvis intended to remain until Nixon agreed to meet with him. The events leading up to and after the meeting are detailed in Elvis Meets the Prez, including Elvis' handwritten letter, memoranda from Nixon staff members, a thank-you note from Nixon to Elvis for gifts received (a gun), and photographs taken in the Oval Office. • Nixon's staff suggesting that Elvis "record an album with the theme 'Get High on Life' at the federal Narcotic Rehabilitation and Research Facility at Lexington, Kentucky
• Nixon's apparent interest in "the King's" bling-bling cuff links.

Viewed from nearly 35 years after it took place, this meeting of two of the 20th century's most influential and fatally flawed men is both funny and poignant. Three years later, Nixon would resign the Office of President in disgrace, and five years after that, Elvis would be found dead of a drug overdose on his toilet.
