She published her first work, "Heidi", in 1880 and went on to write many other children''s books She died in 1891. Louisa May Alcott''s "Little Women" is the story of a Civil War-era family, the Marches. Sisters Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth must cope with the war, illness, poverty and, as they mature, romance.  Born in Philadelphia in 1832, Louisa May Alcott was educated primarily by Henry David Thoreau, and based "Little Women" on her experiences as a hospital nurse during the Civil War. She published a sequel, "Little Men" in 1871 and died in 1888. "The Secret Garden" is thestory of a young English girl, Mary Lennox, who is raised in India, then sent to live with a mysterious uncle at his estate. Mary soon comes to realize that Misselthwaite Manor hides a number of secrets. Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in 1849 in Manchester, England and moved toKnoxville, Tennessee. She published a number of stories before writing "Little Lord Fauntleroy" in 1886and "The Secret Garden" in 1888. She died in 1924.
