Following a stint inthe army, Poe traveled to Baltimore to the home of his father's sister, MariaClemm, and there experienced the first happiness he had ever known. Hefell in love with his 13-year-old first cousin, Virginia, and married her in1836. But six short years later, Virginia suffered a cerebral hemorrhage whichleft her an invalid.
